For some strange reason, sharks have held a special place in our hearts for many years. It could be its sheer might, or perhaps its their sleek physique. Whatever it is, there's no doubting that the Discovery Channel's Shark Week had something to do with our intense level of intrigue.
It's been running since 1988, and over the years, it's seen some changes. Initially developed to raise awareness to the plights that the species faces across the globe, the week-long event morphed into something more sensational over the years. "Docufiction" pieces, like those surrounding Megalodon, became some of their most watched programming in the event's history, but they drew ire from the scientific community. Last year, the networks newly appointed CEO pledged to do away with the sensational content, and viewers are hoping this year's Shark Week event will be a return to form. It's already underway, but the end doesn't come until this Sunday.
With all the excitement surrounding sharks, it's no wonder that Discovery is hoping to keep the ball rolling with shark-related content. In the clip below, they showcase four freshwater animals that almost make sharks look cuddly. They're all pretty nightmarish, but the parasitic lamprey has to be the most frightening of them all. Just look at all these teeth!
Check out the clip below to see the other beasts that Discovery deems more terrifying than sharks. When you're done watching, let us know what you thought of their picks, and be sure to share it with your friends on Facebook!
