When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and left a wake of destruction that's still evident in some communities today. The death toll neared 2,000 people, and the number of people left without homes was staggering. The 2005 storm remains one of the most devastating natural disasters to hit the United States, but it's far from the deadliest one that humanity has endured.

That title is granted to a series of floods that hit China over several months in 1931. HISTORY.com notes that the death toll for this set of events reached a whopping 3.7 million. That's nearly as many people as Los Angeles houses today.

The clip below has 14 other natural disasters that were more destructive than any others — and you might be surprised to see that Katrina isn't on the list. Moreover, there isn't a single disaster on this list that happened in the United States.
